First off, the tough news: this Saturday's Move & Breathe event on the Summer Solstice, June 21st, has been canceled.
But then, the joyful news: it has been rescheduled for July 12th, from 2-4:30pm!
Let me tell you moreā¦
Whatever gender you identify with, we all contain both the masculine and the feminine within us. It is no secret that our entire society, especially in the western world, has been highly programmed by the masculine through the patriarchy. I am no exception. I have moved through the vast majority of my life with a hustle and grind mentality, always making things happen, often times forcing things to move even when they didn't want to move at all.
Enter pole dancing.
The first time I ever tried pole dancing, I did it because I consider myself a person who would try anything once--not because I considered myself sexy, or because I even liked dancing. I didn't know upon entering that dance studio that I would fall in love with the art form, that it would become my go-to form of fitness and strength building, or, most surprisingly, that it would become a place of spiritual growth and transformation for me.
As a breathwork healing facilitator and spiritual seeker, I often find myself in community with people of all kinds of faiths, leaders of all sorts of religions and spiritual practices, storytellers, guides, and keepers of ancient wisdom. I've read so many books, attended so many retreats, and deepened on my spiritual journey in festivals and workshops. To my surprise, though, it is truly with each pole class I've attended over the years, that I've released the most amount of shame programmed into me by our patriarchal dominant culture that is intent on making women forget just how powerful we are. I have released judgment of other women, I have questioned the self talk that tells me that I am much better at being friends with men. I have questioned and analyzed all the ways I judge my own body and the ways that I move. In a world of man-spreading, pole dancing has taught me how to take up space. And each pole class has reminded me of the sheer strength of my body as a woman, how much it can do, how far it can stretch, how graceful it can be even through painful moments.
As a mother, all of these lessons were mirrored in my journey to and through birthing my first child. Through all the discomfort of my growing body, the conversations and deeper friendships I made with women in my life as I learned more about birth, through all the blood, the pain, the tears, ultimately, my body was the bridge, the doorway, the portal between a spiritual realm and life on earth.
On July 12th, Steffy Abayan, Founder of Fantasy Factory will be leading us through an introductory pole dancing class. To dance, especially with other women, is movement work, mirror work, remembering work. Then, I will lead us through a Breathwork Experience that will remind us of a truth we so often forget in this dominant culture that we live in: that as women, we are more powerful than we have been told. It is time to remember.

- Purchase Tend through me for $22 and place your order by clicking here: Order Tend! While it will take longer to receive as my friend Katie and I will be filling these orders one at a time, it will mean I will see $3 of profit for each purchase, versus the 13 cents I will receive from Amazon purchases.
- The other option is purchase on Amazon here: Tend by Carolene Joy. Should you choose to purchase on Amazon to get your copy more quickly, leaving a review would be incredibly appreciated :)
